My Granny’s Mittens

More Mitten are on their way to our stall at the Neighbourgoods Market in Jhb. You guys loved my granny’s mittens so much the last time that they literally sold out in minutes.

Yes you read correctly all the mittens, not the scarves and neck warmers, but the mittens are hand made by my actual grandmother who turned 80 last December. She is an extraordinarily talented, creative and busy little lady and she puts a HOLE LOT OF LOVE into everything she does. Here is a sneak peak of her newest lot of unique little mittens.

LOok what I found!

Today I would like to share with you one of my most crippling obsessions to date. I have always been a person with extreme hoarding potential, which is why forced annual cleansing sessions have become mandatory in order to maintain household sanity. These cruel sessions are normally over seen by my better half who seems to have no heavy weight issues with letting go of things.

Now, don’t get me wrong, things are things and you can’t take them with you when you die.. I’m just saying… that if I could… I would like to be buried wrapped in my collection of vintage trims or at least have them donated to some sort of museum for the textile obsessed.

My serious trim collection started about three years ago with Vintage buttons, mostly plastic, however I’ve collected a solid supply of glass and mother of pearls over the years. But that is a hole other blog post. Buttons where cheaper to collect during that time of my life and I still vividly remember the guilt that I felt having to leave those beautiful 100% cotton trims behind in the dusty dark corners of thrift shops, old factory warehouses and inherited fabric shops now owned by people who do not remember a time before MADE IN CHINA.

Wednesday 21 March is Human Rights Day, a day when we celebrate South Afica’s Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

This is what has brought our beautiful country together and keeps us grounded with integrity. Human Rights Day is a great excuse for South Africans to tap into our people’s passionate love for food and culture, and celebrate our individual rights as one.
